At Smiles 4 Life Pediatric Dentistry, we want your child to feel comfortable while visiting our office. Children often experience dental anxiety. Some of our patients have already had negative dental experiences, and we want to change that.
If your child has a fear of the dentist or if you have had a bad experience with another dentist, come see how we can help your child feel safe again. We offer several different types of sedation, depending on the type of dental work your child needs.
Laughing gas is our most recommended form of dental sedation for several reasons. First, the gas is easily administered through a breathing mask. Second, the gas begins working quickly and wears off as soon as the patient takes the mask off.
We use laughing gas because it is effective in helping children relax and to sit through treatment without panicking. Our team will continue to communicate with your child throughout the appointment to ensure everything is going well.
Oral conscious sedation may be recommended for more intense dental treatments and for our patients with high dental anxiety. Oral sedation is administered as an oral medication, either in the form of a liquid or a tablet.
The sedation is heavier than laughing gas, and your child may need help getting around before and after treatment. However, your child will remain conscious during treatment, so we can continue to communicate.
If your child needs a complex treatment or more than one treatment at a time, we may recommend IV sedation. Intravenous, or IV, sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream here in our office.
The medication works quickly to relax your child’s muscles and creates a dream-like experience. After the treatment, we make sure your child is recovering before sending you home.
